Sometimes a remodel is done because you want a change. Other times a remodel can be done because changes are needed to the structure of the home to accommodate a physically limited individual. When the latter is needed, there are important considerations that need to be worked through before the remodel begins. It is important to map out a game plan and determine all the areas that are affected. If the person remains within the home while the remodel takes place, then accommodations will need to be made to ensure that their safety, security, and functionality is as unaffected as possible. If the individual cannot be present during the remodel, then an appropriate living situation will need to be found during the changes.

Game Plan

The game plan will ensure that the home is remodeled in a way to increase the functionality of the individual in the fastest way possible. The way to do this is to consider the changing needs of the individual and determine the most urgent needs that should be addressed first. Then determine if the remodel can be done in such a way to preserve the new areas so that they are not negatively affected by the future remodel. There is nothing more frustrating than remodeling an area and having it destroyed due to work in the next phase of the remodel.

Material Needs

Another thing to keep in mind is what the individual will need to increase their mobility/quality of life. Does the individual need bars placed along the hallways, or will they need more automation, such as lifts installed and possibly a hospital bed with medical functionality? These are important things to consider because it is these things that will begin to add up as the remodel progresses. Understanding the present (and future) remodel needs will allow you to budget better (and put money away as needed for future use).

Immediate vs. Future Need

Sometimes an individual has a progressive disease that will require future remodeling. For these individuals, it is good to determine if a transitional remodel can be accomplished. This means that the current remodel will be the first wave of changes and then as the disability progresses, then a second and possibly third wave of changes will occur. In this instance, it will be important to allow for future changes as required with as little interruption as possible to the person’s daily activities.
