You know it as the loo, the john, the throne, or the commode. This week we will talk about picking out the perfect toilet. The average person spends, in their lifetime, 1 to 1.5 years on the toilet. For this much time, it is important to pick out a functional and comfortable commode. What type of factors do you need to take into account?

Height of Commode

It is difficult to find a receptacle that will please everyone when there are individuals of different heights within the residence. It is important to choose a toilet that is as comfortable as possible for both. For the very short individual, there can always be a step stool available to rest their feet to prevent dangling. The legs can have a tendency to fall asleep due to the pressure from the seat on the back of the legs if there is any length of time spent sitting.

Style of Toilet

Toilets come in two styles, 1-piece or 2-piece. The 2-piece toilet consists of the tank and the bowl. The 1-piece has everything attached together. The 1-piece toilets are usually more expensive, but easier to clean. The 2-piece toilet is bigger and potentially less durable. Obviously, more pieces mean more areas that can get dirty or wear out.  It is a personal choice regarding which style is best. Each choice has pros and cons, and it is up to the individual which style works best in their home.

Shape of Bowl

The bowl can either be round or elongated. The size of the bathroom and personal comfort will decide which bowl is chosen. The elongated bowl is usually 2 inches longer than the round bowl (18 in. vs 16 in.).

Water Usage

Toilets are available with either the original flush capacity (3.5 to 7 gallons of water per flush) or the high-efficiency capacity (1.6 gallons per flush). Choosing the high efficiency can offer you a significant savings on your water bill. The newer model toilets will conform to the Federal plumbing standards which state that the toilet must follow the high-efficiency standards.

Extras

Some fun and functional items available for your choice of toilet can include adding a bidet option. The bidet can either be a separate fixture or something added to the bowl. The bidet functions as a way to cleanse oneself with a steady stream of water. Some toilets that have bidets also come with a drying option. Another choice that is an option is adding a light to the bowl. The light can either be on all the time or be motion activated. This can serve as a way to illuminate the way to the bowl in the middle of the night. Yet another option is to purchase a heated toilet seat.
